Welcome to Year 6 2024-2025
Class Teachers
Welcome to the Year 6 Learning Journey.
Here we will share some of the things we get up to during each half term.
Autumn Term
Mayoral Visit
Visit from Cllr Mike Booth and Cllr Christine Sollis, Mayor and Mayoress of Hyndburn
Y6 were visited by the mayor and mayoress of Hyndburn in connection with British Values Week. We had prepared lots of questions in preparation to ask them. In answering our questions they explained how they had been elected: the mayor had put himself forward after serving as a local councillor for many years as he was proud of his local area and wanted to promote it. Each mayoral term lasts for 12 months and the post is alternated between the two local political parties – Labour and Conservative. The role involves being a figurehead for initiatives in Hyndburn, representing the people of Hyndburn at local events and promoting the area. It is a very busy job and therefore he has a mayoress who helps too. Cllr Booth explained about the regalia he and the mayoress wear and that it is kept in a safe in Accrington Town Hall – he is not allowed to take it home and is only allowed to wear it when representing Hyndburn. We asked what charities he is fundraising for in his term of office. He said there were two: Lancashire Hospice and Accrington Ladies Football Club. We also invited him to some things we will be doing as a school this academic year.
Woodlands and Foodbank
Throughout year 6 children volunteer at Woodlands Nursing Home and the Clayton-le-Moors Foodbank. At Woodlands they join in with games and activities, and read and talk to residents about what they have been learning. This is such a valuable experience for both young and old! At the foodbank they work with Pastor Anne to create parcels for people in our local area who are in need. Our Harvest Appeal is also donated to the foodbank.
Spring Term
Drone Day
In January Y6 took part in a 'Drone Day' as part of their Coding lessons in Computing. They learnt how to control the drones using the commands they wrote. Using code we taught them to fly in different shapes. We had to make sure we worked safely so they didn't collide!
Victorian Day
We had a day where we came to school dressed as Victorian children. We took part in lots of activities such as learning about Victorian money, playing with Victorian toys and games, doing Victorian handwriting (hard!) and learning about school life in Victorian times. We definitely prefer coming to school in 2025 but it was great to take part!
Fairground Rides
In DT we have been learning about structures and how to make models with moving parts. We also learnt how to program Microbits with our coding skills and learnt how to use equipment like saws and glue guns safely. We then had a challenge: we had to build, in groups, a working model of a fairground rise that was electrically powered. This took skills from DT, Computing and Science. We had a great time working in our groups and created some amazing rides!
Summer Term
VE Day - 80th Anniversary
-
Evacuees came to our school from Ardwick in Manchester and Bradford with 2 of their teachers;
-
There was an air raid shelter on the field - part of this is now buried;
-
The children took part in gas mask and air raid drills - the quickest they evacuated the building was 2.5 minutes;
-
The children got a 2 day holiday for VE Day and it was celebrated in following years too.
